Lukashenka: No troops gathering near Ukrainian border
Lukashenka has assured that Belarus is not building up troops along the border with Ukraine, leader of UDAR party Vitali Klitschko said.
He studied the situation at the border check point Gorsk in Chernigov Oblast (the Russian and Belarusian borders) on March 17. His trip was connected with the tension caused by Russian extremists’ attempts to enter Ukraine and the threat of Russia’s intervention, BelaPAN reports.
Klitschko discussed the issue with the Belarus ambassador in Kiev Valyantsin Vyalichka on his way to the check-point. The ambassador referred to Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s words and assured him that no troops were building up on the Belarusian border. Alyaksandr Lukashenka guaranteed the inviolability of the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, Vyalichka said.
Ukraine enhanced security at the Russian, Belarusian and the self-declared Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic borders earlier.
Lukashenka offered Russia an opportunity to send 15 more fighter jets to Belarus in connection with the enhanced NATO activities in Poland and Lithuania on March 12. Some observers read the move as Lukashenka's desire to support Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
