Minister of Culture: We thanked Alexievich by telegram, is it not enough?

The state has congratulated Svetlana Alexievich on getting the Nobel Prize in Literature enough, Minister of Culture Barys Svaytlou told journalists in the House of Representatives on December 10.

Svyatlou: “The Ministry of Culture has congratulated her. Do you think this is not enough? What did we have to do? We sent her an ordinary telegram and we congratulated her whole-heartedly… Of course we are proud of having a a Nobel Prize laureate in Belarus. Should we celebrate it? I will think about the ways of celebrating it in the Ministry of Culture after she gets the prize.”

Alexievich needs to take the initiative too, the Minister added. “I do not understand how we can celebrate it if she does not want it,” the official said. However, he did not ask the writer about it, he confessed.
