Mother who nearly killed her 7-year-old daughter – a regular patient of “Navinki”

The European Radio for Belarus tried to find out whether she will go back home from hospital and whether Ksyusha will be safe in this case.
A week ago, on May 19, a Minsk dweller Lyudmila Svidzerskaya hit her 7-year-old daughter Kseniya with a knife. The father saved her. He heard his daughter crying, rushed into her room and dragged the mother away from her. The woman was standing over Ksyusha with a knife covered with blood ready to make a second hit. The only thing she said was that a voice from heaven had told her to kill her daughter.

Ksyusha was taken to the surgical department of the children’s’ hospital. Her mother – to the mental hospital “Navinki”.

People living in the house suddenly phoned ERB and said they saw Lyudmila in the yard. But a nurse of the 10th department where the woman is being kept at the moment refuted this information and said it was impossible.

Halina: “It is a quarantined department. We never let anybody go out. We used to let our patients go back home for weekends but we stopped doing it about 2 years ago”.

The European Radio for Belarus found out that Lyudmila Svidzerskaya was a well-known patient in “Navinki”. The nurse Halina couldn’t even recall the exact number of times the woman had been delivered to their hospital with exacerbation of schizophrenia.

Halina: “It is our patient. It’s not the first time she has been here. I can’t say how many times she has been delivered to us but it is definitely not the first time”.

The nurse said that Lyudmila Svidzerskaya was in a very bad condition. Only pills and injections are helping to keep her from madness. Taking into account the fact that the woman is a regular patient of “Navinki” a question whether it is normal to let such patients go back home arises. But the nurse said it was impossible to isolate such people.

Halina: “It’s not a hostel here; we cannot keep our patients in hospital all the time. They spend a certain amount of time here. Their condition is being checked and when they get better and can contact with people we discharge them from hospital”.

Doctors noted that after having been discharged patients are supervised by psychoneurological dispensaries. They are being watched and sent back to hospital if necessary. But is cannot prevent tragedies. A woman who was a regular patient of “Navinki” tortured her 9-year-old daughter and then hanged her a year ago. Not long ago a Minsk dweller killed her daughter 12 days after having been discharged from hospital.

Lyudmila’s neighbours and relatives are not likely to see her anytime soon. The deputy public prosecutor of Leninski District Uladzimir Kraychanka said that a criminal case according to the article “Murderous assault” had been started against her.

Ksyusha is still in hospital but doctors say that nothing threatens her health now.

But there are patients who did not commit any crime and were delivered to hospital. The deputy head physician of the Republican mental hospital Stanislau Sakovich says that the police are not informed when such patients are discharged.

Stanіslau Sakovіch: “It’s not a prison. We discharge them when it’s time. Informing… we are doing our job, and the police are doing theirs”.
