Andrzej Poczobut, political prisoner and activist of the Polish minority in Belarus, was sentenced in Hrodna to eight years in a strict regime colony. He was found guilty of "calling for sanctions" and "inciting social hatred". On January 16, the regional court heard the case behind closed doors (judge - Dzmitry Bubenchyk).
Poczobut was arrested on March 25, along with other Polish minority activists. Since then he has been kept behind bars, first in the investigative prison in Zhodzina, then - in the prison No. 1 in Minsk, and since September 2022 - in the prison in Hrodna. The political prisoner was offered to write a petition for clemency, but he refused.
The authorities saw "incitement to hatred" in Andrzej Poczobut's article about the Soviet attack on Poland in September 1939. He also "promoted the glorification of the Armia Krajowa".
Last year, the KGB added Poczobut to the "List of Persons Involved in Terrorist Activities.
