Belarusian authorities make a statement on Byalyatski in UNO
Belarus' representative Mikhail Khvastou has read it out.
The report of the Special Rapporteur on situation with human rights defenders was discussed in the UNO's Human Rights Council on March 5, informs the web-site of the human rights center "Vans". During the dialogue, our country's representative stated that the UNO's Rapporteur misunderstood Byalyatski's case. According to the diplomat's words, the sentence to Byalyatski has nothing to do with his activity as a human rights defender, and is only connected with violation of the tax legislation.
Besides, representatives of many European countries reacted to this statement. They highly appreciated Byalyatski's activity as a human rights defender. Hungary's representative even compared him with Czech politician and civil activist Václav Havel.
