BSSR government and Lukashenka promised to install a monument in Kurapaty
The government is yet to deliver after 23 years, Lukashenka - after only 10 years.
This promise is reflected on the memorial shield in Kurapaty: "A monument to the victims of mass repressions will be installed here in accordance with the decree of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR, dated 1989".
Euroradio decided to ask a question about the monument to those who promised to install it, 23 years later.
They tell us in the Council of Ministers that the idea... reached the term of limitation.
"No one is dealing with this issue, it was so long ago, there are no people who could do this anymore", - says a representative of the government, adding that the monument may appear "if there are initiators".
The BSSR Council of Ministers has no legal successors, therefore, there's still no monument, says the scientific head of the Kurapaty memorial Maya Klyashtornaya. She suggests a museum there.
"It's just a monument. I had a broader program, I wanted a museum there. I still hope that we can change something in this regard", - Maya Klyashtornaya says.
Meanwhile, the state leader also stands for installation of a monument, "simple and clear to the people", in Kurapaty.
He said this 10 years ago in his message to the Parliament:
"There are people buried in Kurapaty. In 30s, 40s, they were shot by the Germans, or somebody else, but still, there are people buried there! We should install a simple and clear to the people monument, which would meet the spirit of this place. This is a place for gloom and contemplation, not for the political dancing on the bones", - Alyaksandr Lukashenka said.
At present, there is only a stone at the place where the monument should be in Kurapaty. Moreover, there will be a restaurant complex nearby. The memorial shield with the promise to install the monument disappeared.
