World Radio Day marked today

UNESCO initiated the celebration of the World Radio Day on February 13. It is a young holiday that appeared in 2012. The choice of the date was not accidental: United Nations Radio was launched on February 13, 1946. The editorial office was situated in the UN headquarters.

The holiday is supposed to enhance cooperation between people connected with radio – broadcasting companies and amateurs. UNESCO has urged all countries to take part in the celebration.

According to UNESCO, there are 51 thousand radio stations working in the world and people own 2.4 billion radio sets. The income of online radio station kept increasing by 28% a year between 2006 and 2013.
