Expert: Conditions in Belarus are conducive for oligarchs

There are favorable conditions in Belarus for the emergence of oligarchs, Leanid Zaika, director of the Minsk-based Strategy Center think tank, told the European Radio for Belarus. Belneftekhim, a state petrochemical monopoly, said in a statement that it was set to sell profit-making enterprises Polimir and Naftan. Leanid Zaika describes it as an alarming signal.

"When Belarus's exports have risen by 78 percent since January 2008, it means that enterprises are making money and the country is doing fine. What is the need to privatize?".

The expert compares it with the situation in Russia 15 years ago when privalization was launched. Russian oligarchs started their "work activities" when they were quite young. The children of Belarusian leaders could also follow the same path. Leanid Zaika says:

"For those who are now 25-27 years old (mostly the children of the country's leaders), there is an excellent opportunity to become oligarchs. Who can stop them? If I were Lukashenka's son, I would definitely become an oligarch".
