Historical Jewish neighborhood destroyed in Pinsk
The historical Jewish neighborhood -- Carlin -- is being destroyed in the city of Pinsk. Carlin was founded in the 17th century and is a birthplace of many renowned politicians and the founder of Microsoft's ancestors.
Carlin will now give way to the buildings of the Pinsk University, made from concrete and glass.
Several old houses have already been demolished. Perhaps, they do not haveany architectural value, but a large part of the neighborhood dating back to the 19the-20th century will disappear because of a new construction project. The city's old Jewish spirit will disappear as.
The local Jewish community has been making attempts to save the neighborhood, but it has not dared to stage any active actions. Several appeals were sent to the government agencies at various levels. The authorities replied that destruction would be carried out very carefully. Eventually, they "carefully" destroyed the whole quarter.
At the same time, the city authorities seek to develop tourism in Pinsk. “Who is going to see muli-storey buildings from concrete? Would you go?" asks former local council member Viktar Yarashuk. "When you watch Carlin's houses being destroyed, it is hard to understand the people who give such an order. This district is historical. These buildings could have hosted cafes, souvenir shops and handcraft shops. There is nothing like that in Pinsk. Jews from the whole world and Poles come to visit our city. The authorities should develop the nostalgia tourism".
A source of the European Radio for Belarus at the local council said there are no funds for the reconstruction of the historical houses. It is cheaper to build modern and functional shyscrapers frpom concrete and glass. Furthermore, the city has already received money for this new project.
