Poland has imposed sanctions on a Belarusian exporter of nitrogen fertilizers. The intermediary company NFT LLC is believed to have helped Grodno Azot circumvent Western sanctions imposed three years ago for firing workers for "political" reasons. NFT LLC supplied Grodno Azot's urea to the EU. The sanctions list was expanded on the initiative of the National Tax Service.

In early 2023, there was an investigation into how Grodno Azot was circumventing sanctions and selling fertilizers to Europe. There were arrests in Lithuania. But even after that, the gray schemes worked.

Poland was concerned about the growth of nitrogen fertilizer imports from Belarus and Russia (twice last year). In these countries, production costs are much lower due to low gas prices. Therefore, Polish producers, who find it difficult to compete, began to protest.
