Haidukou's case: a spy or a political prisoner?

"I think that this is a provocation or he has been crossed up. They have warned him many times –  refuse, leave. They came to his university and asked teachers to make him fail his exams. They came to his work too. They warned him a lot," - says Volha Haidukova, the mother of the "treason" suspect.

It is easy to understand a mother. Who would believe in her son's innocence if it wasn't her. It is more complicated for the others. According to official information, "illegal activity of a citizen of Belarus who collected and passed information of political and economic character to fulfill the task given by the foreign intelligence was stopped. (...) the citizen was detained by the KGB officers at the moment of making a recess with the data which the foreign special services are interested in". And all this is happening in the times of Skype and Gmail. An absolute mystery.

Moreover, Haidukou's friends and allies keep saying that the youngster couldn't possibly know any secret information - he worked as a metalworker and hanged out with the oppositionists, this is all his "illegal activity".

In order to decide whether to consider Haidukou a political prisoner, human rights defenders even organized a round table discussion. However, there was no result. One of the organizers Dzyanis Sadouski says that there's too little information both about the accusation and Haidukou personally.

"The case is not clear. Intelligence, recess making... Naturally, it reminds about the 30s. The case definitely looks as a political one. However, there are too few facts by the moment, unfortunately".

HR defenders could not find out from Haidukou's allies what exactly the Union of Young Intellectuals - the organization where Andrei Haidukou is a Vice-Chairman - does, even this. Thus, they gave the members of the organization several days to clarify the situation. They promise to make a decision soon.

Meanwhile, Haidukou is in the KGB prison. Since November 8. He is to be officially accused in the nearest days. Or not - different things happen in the KGB. Let's just recall the case of photographer Anton Surapin.
