Soviet war memorials vandalized in European capitals

Unidentified perpetrators on May 9 sprayed red paint on the sculptures of the Soviet soldiers on the Green Bridge in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and wrote an obscene word on the memorial, Lithuanian Radio reported.

In the morning of May 9, the police found a suspecious bag near the monument but it was identified as a dummy explosive device left behind by the vandals. The bag was destroyed by demolition experts from the Lithuanian counter-terrorism squad, Aras. Traffic on the bridge was stopped for one hour.

A similar incident took place last night in the Austrian capital Vienna. The only difference was that vandals had used a black paint to pour on a granite wall with the incripted golden names of Stalin and 52 Soviet soldiers who died to free Vienna.

Russian and seven more CIS countries have sent a note of protest to the Austrian foreign ministry.
