Belarus state TV and radio chief uhappy about suspended sanctions

Старшыня БТ Давыдзька: Прыпыненне дзеяння санкцый мне не падабаецца

The EU has suspended sanctions against high-ranking Belarusian officials for four months. Will the officials go to the EU?

Chairman of Belteleradio company Henadz Davydzka notes that suspension of the sanctions, not their complete removal, is not a very pleasant thing.

"The fact that the sanctions were suspended, but not removed, shows that it is a half-measure. As in the case of love - I love you, but only if you learn to wash or cook something. I don't like the suspension of sanctions. The suspension of sanctions is good for Belarusian companies doing business. As for the emotional component - it is very unpleasant. And I do not think that the 170 people, who temporarily had sanctions against them suspended, would quickly run for Schengen visas to travel to developed countries. It is a disgusting fuss of those who did it."

Davydzka noted that he did not specifically track when he had the sanctions against him imposed and suspended, so he as no plans to suddenly go to the EU, because of the decision of Brussels.

But Davydzka's predecessor Aliaksandr Zimouski in his commentary to the Euroradio notes that he would not mind "a short car trip around the countries of the European Union", but no more than that - he does not suffer too much because of the sanctions.

Judge Tatsiana Charkas convicted and sent to prison for 3-4 years Aliaksandr Atroshchankau, Aliaksandr Malchanau and Dzmitry Novikau. She was under sanctions since 2011. During this time, the judge received a higher qualifying category.

Tatsiana Charkas answered the phone with a cheerful voice, but when she heard what the conversation would be about, she refused to talk and hung up.

The head of Minsk police Aliaksandr Barsukou, Euroradio was told, had no time to respond to a short question. In the list of persons restricted for travelling abroad he has been since 2012.

The receptionist pointed out that the chief of the metropolitan police is not going to the West any time soon and generally prefers to rest at home.

Answering the question of where he will go after the temporary lifting of the sanctions, the CEC secretary Mikalai Lazavik said that he needs to go to the European Union exclusively on business.

"It's as if I was sitting there waiting for the sanctions to be removed! Once we had to go to an international conference on elections, which took place in Western Europe, and we could not go because the sanctions were imposed. In the near future I do not plan to go to Europe, unless there is some kind of business trip," says Lazavik and admits that he always spends vacations at home.

Over the past five years, the "black list" has changed several times: some individuals and businesses were excluded, others - included in it. As a result of recent changes in August this year the list had 175 people and 14 Belarusian companies. The suspension of sanctions has spread to 171 people, four of them - Viktar Sheiman, Yury Sivakou, Uladzimir Naumau, and Dzmitry Pauliuchenka - stayed on the "black list".
