Lithuania to invite Lukashenka to rebury Kalinouski's remains

The remains of 20 participants of the 1863-1864 uprising led by Kastus Kalinouski against the Russian Empire were discovered during excavation works on the Gedymin Mount in central Vilnius in July 2017. All of them were executed by either shooting or hanging and later secretly buried. The majority of them were born in what today is called Belarus. The Lithuanian forensic experts have claimed with 95% accuracy that the remains of Belarus' national hero Kastus Kalinouski were found.

The authorities in Belarus, however, have recently attempted to revise his role and significance in the nation's history.

The exact date of the re-burial ceremony is yet to be known, because the reconstruction of the chapel at the Rosa cemetery in Vilnius is not complete. Most likely, the insurgents will be reburied in the fall of 2019.

Mr Kvetkauskas has confirmed that the names of all the insurgents will be incripted in three languages - Lithuanian, Polish and Belarusian "in order to emphasize the importance of the uprising for all of the mentioned countries."
