Svetlana Alexievich to pay 13% tax on Nobel Prize
The first Belarusian to win the Prize, Svetlana Alexievich will receive 8 million kronor, or 953 thousand dollars.
But will the laureate have to pay income tax on this money?
Euroradio asked the Ministry of Taxes and Duties this question. The answer is that the tax will have to be paid if the person lives in Belarus for more than 183 days in a year.
"If you received an award from Belarus, then you would have benefits. If, for example, you have the title of "People's Artist", there are monthly payments, and they are not taxed. And the Nobel Prize is the income from abroad and it is taxed 13%" said the person at the hotline of the Ministry of Taxes and Duties.
Svetlana Alexievich will have to pay the state 123,890 dollars.
The writer said she is going to use the prize money to write new books.
