Picket against Russian airbase banned in Mahilou
The action to protest the deployment of a Russian airbase, scheduled for August 18, has been rejected by authorities in Mahilou.
Uladzimir Shantsau, head of Mahilou regional branch of United Civil Party who filed the application says he is going to appeal the decision in court.
The deployment of a Russian air base contradicts Article 18 in the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, the politician said. Under the Constituion, Belarus is a neutral country. The action has not been allowed in order to avoid political tensions with Russia, Shanstau reckons.
Shantsau filed his application to hold a picket against the Russian airbase on July 24. He was seeking to stage the action at the Khimik Stadium in a remote area far away from the city center.
