80 thousand signatures against nuclear waste dump at Belarus border
The Belarus Ministry of Nature has collected over 80 thousand signatures
from the Belarus
residents against the planned construction of a dump for nuclear waste from the
Ignalina nuclear power plant near the Lithuanian-Belarus border, said Minister
for Natural Resources and Environment Protection, Liavoncij Haruzhyk.
In the course of pro-active negotiations with Lithuania
and the international organizations, Belarus has managed to influence
the selection of possible dump sites and take part in evaluation procedures of
how the nuclear waste could affect environment, he noted.
The nuclear waste dump will be built several kilometers away from the
Belarusian border, not 800
meters as initially planned. Besides, some safety
parameters have been improved in the course of the talks.
