Authorities in Minsk send opposition to celebrate Freedom Day at a remote park

The Minsk City Hall proposed Thursday that the pro-democracy forces celebrate the Freedom Day or the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian National Republic (BNR) on the remote Bangalore Square in the Belarusian capital, Mikola Statkevich told the European Radio for Belarus.

"They have approved a usual route from the Academy of Sciences on the sidewalks to the Bangalore Square. All the organizers refused. I personally voice my intention to come at Yakub Kolas Square at 1800 on March 25", he said.

Apart from Statkevich, other opposition leaders -- Lyavon Barscheuski, Anatol Lyabedzka and Anatol Sidarevich -- also attended the meeting at the City Hall. All of them were warned that if the action was to be held under a different scenario, they would face prosecution.

The pro-democracy forces have called on all the people who wish to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the BNR to gather at 1800 on March 25 on Yakub Kolas Square and then proceed on central streets, laying flowers to the monuments and buildings associated with the Belarusian National Republic.
