Belarus wants Lukashenka to be invited to EaP summit in Vilnius
Then the official Minsk will decide who will represent the country at the summit.
Belarusian Ambassador to Germany Andrei Hiro claimed it during a discussion in Berlin on May 7. The discussion was organized under the aegis of Minsk forum. The Belarusian ambassador made a speech after the other speakers.
Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg invited Alyaksandr Lukashenka to take part in the Eastern Partnership inauguration summit in Prague in 2009. However, it was requested to send some other representative to the summit, Hiro said. Minsk accepted the terms because there were a lot of hopes connected with the new EU policy, the ambassador explained. However, the history of the Eastern Partnership “is just a disappointment”, Hiro added.
The diplomat hopes that Belarus will not be discriminated at the summit in Vilnius in November.
According to unofficial sources, Minsk and Brussels are discussing the format of Belarus’ participation in the summit. In particular, the possibility of inviting Minister of Foreign Affairs Uladzimir Makei is being considered. The issue is connected with the necessity to release and acquit Belarusian political prisoners.
