CEC plays safe forbidding representatives to make speeches on BT?
The Central Election Committee plays safe forbidding representatives of presidential candidates to make speeches on TV and in the radio. An expert in the field of election legislation Syarhei Alfer expressed the opinion in an interview with ERB. According to the Election Code, candidates’ representatives are not forbidden to make speeches instead of them but the possibility is not clearly indicated either, said Alfer.
The expert thinks that the Central Election Commission could allow representatives to make speeches on TV and in the radio because they have the right to fulfill all the functions of presidential candidates and to represent them.
However, Yury Chavusau said in an interview with “Nasha Niva” that only candidates could make speeches according to the Election Code. Representatives can replace them only during debates.
Let us remind you that a presidential candidate Ryhor Kastusyou was going to allow his representative Alyaksandr Milinkevich to make a speech on TV instead of him. However, the CEC explained that, according to the legislation, only presidential contenders were allowed to make the speeches.
