Opposition to nominate single presidential candidate in April
Among the likely contenders are Ryhor Kastusyou and Alena Anisim.
The People's Referendum campaign intends to nominate a single presidential candidate for the elections. This was announced on March 7 at the BPF Minsk meeting by its chairman Alyaksei Yanukevich. The campaign includes the BPF Party, the Gavary Praudu campaign, movement For Freedom and the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada).
Yanukevich said that they planned to nominate the single in the middle of March, but the decision was postponed and his name will probably be revealed a month later, in mid-April. There is a preliminary list, from which a single candidate will be chosen.
According to BelaPAN, the list has two representatives of the Belarusian Popular Front Party, including Deputy Chairman Ryhor Kastusyou, as well as the first deputy chairman of the public association Belarusian Language Society, Alena Anisim. The leader of the Tell the Truth campaign, Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu, is also on the preliminary list, but he probably would refuse to participate in the presidential race.
As for the leader of Za Svabodu (For Freedom) movement, Alyaksandr Milinkevich, he does not plan to stand as a candidate, as he is now running for the office of EHU rector.
