Opposition pushes for amendments in electoral laws

The United Pro-Democracy Forces (UDF) have proposed to the House of Representatives to introduce amendments in the electoral laws.
Anatol Lyabedzka who co-chairs the Political Council of the UDF told the European Radio for Belarus that the proposed amendments target the provisions which deal with the control over the vote count.

“In the first place, we propose to include the representatives of pro-democracy parties and NGOs into the election commissions at all levels. Secondly, we propose that the rights and possibilities of observers be expanded. We are also talking about several aspects associated with the liberalization of the election campaign”, he said.

Anatol Lyabedzka also said that a letter proposing to set up a joint working group was sent to Vadzim Papou, the chairman of the House of Representatives. The group would comprise lawmakers and UDF representatives in order to study the possible amendments.

However, the politician is doubtful that the authorities would make a step towards the opposition. Lyabedzka notes that either respond from the parliament -- positive or negative -- will be treated as important.
