Over 9000 HIV positive people in Belarus
There are 9142 registered HIV cases in Belarus as of June 1, 2008, reports the National Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health. 405 people have tested positive in the first five months of 2008. The Homel region is taking the lead, with 4831 HIV cases, while Minsk and the Minsk region have reported 1288 and 1146 cases correspondingly.
Young people aged between 15 and 29 account for most of the cases (6427).
In the five months of 2008, 295 people contracted the virus through sexual intercourse.
