Witness Arif: We got out of the underground along the ties!

Arif, at about 8.30: “At the moment of the explosion I was approaching “October” station in a train that had been heading away from the Central Railway Terminal. We were about 200 or 300 metres away from the station and the train shook and our ears got blocked. We did not understand that it was a blast. People were quiet because nobody understood that it was an explosion. It is nonsense in our country. We started approaching “October” station. It was dark there. Then everyone understood what had happened, people were knocking on the windows and on the doors. I could see nothing, the smoke was thick. People were panicking”.

People did not know what was going on. Somebody pressed the emergency button and asked the driver to explain what was going on. We were told to sit quiet. The train headed for the next station. We stopped about 300 meters away from “Victory Square” and started moving back meter by meter. Then the driver appeared a few minutes later. He said that he was going to explain how we could get out of the tunnel, what side we had to keep to avoid touching the electric rail. We started letting people out, mainly women and children from the first car.

The driver went to the second car and we started walking. We reached “Victory Square” station. We were met by employees who helped us get onto the platform. People were calm. They kept phoning relatives and told them not to go to the metro.

Euroradio: Can you recall how many people were at “October” station when your train stopped there?

Arif: They were standing like a wall along the train. I did not see what happened next. I usually pass the station at the time, but I had to go to the Chief Post office today. There are usually a lot of people at this time. It was pitch dark and I could not see anything, I did not see the injured because I was standing next to the other side of the car".

April 11, 19.40

Sevyaryn Kvyatkouskі, journalist and literary man: “I entered the subway near the Central Supermarket and started descending in a crowd. The other group of people were descending from “Kupala” station. Something that seemed like a plop occurred a meter away from the escalator. People cowered automatically and started going back. The smoke was very thick. People started running back, there some panic. Somebody ran to “Kupala” station. I went outside and though that it was a joke, maybe a smoke pellet. I went back to take a picture of it with my smart phone. That was a journalist’s reflex I guess. I saw a woman with an injured leg being carried out. I understood that the case was serious. Then I saw people with injured arms.

There was no great panic. Everyone heard a loud plop but I think that not all the people understood what it was. There was no tremor, our ears were not blocked. The smoke was thick, everything was covered in smoke. It was the end of the workday and there were three groups of people”.

Euroradio reporter: blast occurred on the platform, not in the train

Euroradio reporter Illya Malinouski: “I am here and I can see about 15 ambulances but it is not clear whether they are enough for all the injured. They keep arriving and leaving. People were evacuated from both entrances and official representatives are not reporting anything. They say: we do not know what has happened here, let us find it out. The only confirmed thing is that some people have been killed, but they have not told the exact number. I have seen at least three killed people. Many people are in a very bad state”.

There were not enough ambulances at first and I saw that those who have already died were taken out of them so that the injured could be transported. Special police troops are making people go away, I am near the Kupala Theatre and they are still a making us to leave. They are probably doing it to prevent injuries in case of another blast. Probably all the people who were underground have already been evacuated.

I have talked to a guy who saw everything when he was descending. It happened on the platform and not in the train. He cannot recall where it was in the middle or somewhere else. According to him, it was a massive blast followed by fire. He saw people falling. He said that even the roof collapsed. But the official representative said that the roof did not collapse but some aluminum decorations may have fallen down. However, the station is not destroyed.

Official representatives do not refute that the blasting assembly was packed with buck-shot. There were people with lacerated wounds. It seemed so”.

April 11, 18:20.

There are a lot of ambulances near the blast site but that’s not enough. A dead man has been carried out of an ambulance to transport an injured person to hospital.
