Lazavik: Statkevich would surely be released if he asked for that
CEC Secretary Mikalaj Lazavik speaks about the political prisoner's perspectives for release.
According to Lazavik,
he had a personal acquaintance with the former presidential candidate Mikalaj
Statkevich and says that the politician used to be more tolerant in his
political views.

Mikalaj Lazavik: "It seems to me that he creates such
image of a martyr specially for the society. If he wanted to get released he
would have been set free long ago. It was enough to write a corresponding
appeal for that. The issue (on release - Euroradio) would have been solved
positively, most likely. However, this is his personal choice - this is how he
decided to behave, I think".
The CEC Secretary recalled that during the "storm" of the House of
Government he was in his office and had to turn off the lights and even a
computer because of the danger that the "protesters throw a stone at
him."
Mikalaj Statkevich was arrested after the presidential election in which he
participated as a candidate. On May 26, 2011 he was convicted for
"organization of mass disturbances" to 6 years of imprisonment in the
reinforced security conditions. He is serving punishment in the Mahileu
prison No. 4.
