Radoslaw Sikorski: EU's Eastern policy is successful
The session of the EU's Foreign Ministers is taking place in Brussels on Feb.18. The ministers also discussed realization of the Eastern Partnership's programs.
European
foreign ministers are preparing for the Eastern Partnership Summit, which will
be held in November in Vilnius. Prior to the meeting a representative of the
Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said that the
Vilnius summit will be another occasion to talk about the deepening of
relations between the EU and countries of the Partnership:
Catherine Ashton: "Speaking about the upcoming
Eastern Partnership Summit, which will be held in Vilnius this year, the
representatives of these countries will attend it in order to discuss an
opportunity to deepen the relations with the EU".
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has told Euroradio reporters that
the EU's eastern policy brings a lot of success.
Radoslaw Sikorski: "Just pay attention to the fact
that we are talking about the agreement on association, not wars, with our
Eastern partners. Today, "East" is a place where Europe conducts a
successful policy. We just need to consolidate this success in the form of
bilateral agreements. "
However, there is still a question of political prisoners in Belarus and
Ukraine. EU is not able to influence the political situation in the neighboring
countries so far.
The Eastern Partnership initiative covers six countries - the EU's neighbours: Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. However, Belarus cannot take part in the Eastern Partnership, along with other countries, because of the problems with democracy, human rights violations and repressions against the civil society.
