Rompuy: Sanctions against Russia are aimed at settling Crimean conflict
President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy has explained the coordinated actions of the EU and USA targeted against Russia.
According to him, this is not punishment or revenge; the sanctions are aimed at encouraging Moscow to settle the conflict in a political and diplomatic way, UNIAN reports.
Rompuy announced it at a joint press conference with U.S. President Barrack Obama and President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso after the EU-USA summit.
Brussels and Washington are coordinating their actions in the field of sanctions, Barroso stressed. “We are protecting our common values together – peace, freedom, human rights, the supremacy of law and respect for the international norms. The EU and USA are working together to make sure that inadmissible actions lead to the corresponding consequences,” Barroso added.
