Russia threatens Denmark with nuclear missiles

Russia will consider it a threat if Denmark joins the NATO air defence system, Russian ambassador to Denmark Mikhail Vanin told Jyllands-Posten.

“I do not think that the Danes know all the consequences of joining the American air defence system. Danish warships will be targeted by Russian nuclear missiles if it happens,” the ambassador said.

The kingdom has immediately reacted to the Russian diplomat’s tone. Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard said that such statements were ‘inadmissible’.

“Moscow knows very well that the NATO air defence shield is aimed at defence and it is not directed against Russia. We disagree with Russia in many issues but it is important not to raise your voice during discussions,” the Foreign Minister of the kingdom noted.

Such statements threaten peace and stability, NATO representative in Brussels Oana Lungescu said on Sunday.

According to Lungescu, NATO is going to defend all alliance members from any threats, Reuters reports. Denmark announced its decision to join the system long ago and ‘the tone and essence of the Russian ambassador’s statement came as surprise’, Lunesco stressed.
