Vadzіm Sashuryn: “Pay me 1000 USD and I will be the coach”
The manager of the Belarusian national cross country skiing team is going to resign and even leave sport. This is unexpected news. The legendary biathlonist has been heading the team for only a year. A skier Leanid Karnienka won a silver medal in the 15-km race at the World Championship during this period. It was the first Belarusian medal ever in this sport.
The sportsman informed ERB that the reason for his decision was his low salary. Uladzimir Sashuryn tells us how much the manager of the national team earns now:
“700 thousand BRB. Being all the time abroad you have to pay 200 USD for the phone even if you use roaming. At the same time I am a responsible person, if skis or something are broken I have to pay for it. And I haven’t seen my family for half a year. What sense is in it? What is the profitability of this business? I was given an award fee for the year – 1.5 million BRB. I think there was something to pay me for”.
The sportsman says he will agree to stay if they pay him 1000 USD per month. At the moment they cannot afford it.
Vadzіm Sashuryn: “I met the Minister and we decided to wait till the certification to take the final decision. I have prepared my appeal but the ministry hasn’t signed it yet. The Minister asked me to wait: he said he would try to find some variants because they would like to keep me. But they have limited resources”.
Let us remind you that Vadzim Sashuryn was a biathlon champion three times. That’s why this post and this sport were something new for him.
Vadzіm Sashuryn: “The staff and the sport are very complicated. There is a great difference with biathlon. So I only take it to heart and it does not cost the money I get for it. Someone could dislike me. But I have my own view on the problems of cross country skiing. I tried to solve them and I succeeded in some things. At the moment I do not know who to propose for the position instead of me”.
It is obvious that the sportsman did a good job. The silver medal of Leanid Karnienka could not but impress. Wasn’t Leanid paid either? Vadzim Sashuryn says:
“No, that’s a different case. He was paid very well. But coaches are left out. That’s how the state does it. I have been working out of enthusiasm for a year, it’s enough for me”.
By the way, Vadzim Sashuryn noted that he would never return to the sport again if he left.
Vadzіm Sashuryn: “That’s all. What do they need me for? That’s the situation and I cannot influence it. I have a family to be occupied with”.
The European Radio for Belarus managed to phone the head of the board of directors of national teams if the Ministry of Sport and Tourism Alyaksandr Shavel who confirmed that the coach might leave:
“The rumours are true. He has not resigned yet. The certification of the national team will take place on May 22. The position will not be unoccupied. We have other variants; we can change the structure of the team or something else. There will be a local coach”.
We only have to wait for May 22. Then we will get to know who will “rule” the Belarusian national cross country skiing team.
