Alexander Suvorov monument demolished in Vitsebsk

The monument to Russian field marshal Alexander Suvorov, located in front of house No 28 on the street named after Suvorov, has been demolished. The building now belongs to Eurodevelopment Co which has begun reconstruction works in order to let office spaces in the future.

The monument to Suvorov in Vitsebsk was unveiled in 1952. It was first removed in the fall of 1998 but later reappeared in one of the neighboring backyards. Local opposition member Uladzimir Pleschanka was suspected of stealing the monument. He spent 6 months in pre-trial detention, but a local court was unable to prove his guilt.

The arts commission has confirmed that the cement bust of Alexander Suvorov has no artistic or historical value.
