Border guards free opposition activists without charges
Anatol Lyabedzka, the leader of the United Civic Party, and journalist Vadzim Kaznacheyev have been freed without charges from the border control commandant's office in Astravets.
The oppositionists were detained when departing the town where they had been handing out printed materials. Their next destination was the planned construction site of the country's first nuclear power plant.
After several hours at a police station, Lyabedzka and Kaznacheyev were transferred to the Border Control Committee commandant's office, Anatol Lyabedzka told the European Radio for Belarus.
“We were held at a commandant's office for some time. Initially, they started to file charges of violating the border zone procedures. But, apparently, a new order was later received and we only had to write a statement that we were passing Astravets in transit”.
