Brest activist Vital Koush to remain in custody
The Brest district court rejects defense motion to release civil activist Vital Koush under recognizance.
The court on Monday agreed with the prosecution on the grounds that "the defendant faces a grave crime subject to more than 3 years in prison." Other motions by the defense were not allowed.
Civil activist Vital Koush, 29 has been in pre-trial detention since September 1, 2012. He was sentenced by the Brest district court to four years in prison and confiscation of property for allegedly having tried to assist a group of illegal migrants from India to cross the Belarus-Poland border.The Brest Regional Court ruled that the sentence be revised the other judges in the same district court.
The next hearing is scheduled for September 4 at 1430.
