Democratic opposition council appears in Belarus
A declaration about the situation in Belarus has been adopted at an opposition meeting in the office of the BPF in Minsk today. It has also been decided to create the National Coordination Council of Democratic Opposition. The Council will struggle to release people arrested for political reasons, provide information to Belarusian citizens and the international community and try to return Belarus to the way of law and democracy, to create conditions for free and fair elections in the country, informs Radio Liberty.
Almost all democratic opposition organizations have signed the Declaration: the Congress of Democratic Trade Unions, Belarusian Social-Democratic Party (Assembly), BSDA, party of the left “Fair World”, UCP, association “Tell the Truth”, movement “For Freedom”, “Young Front”, “European Belarus”. The steering committee of the women’s party “Nadzeya”, of the Belarusian Social-Democratic Party Assemble, the BPF, of the steering committee of the Freedom and Progress Party and the Council of Belarusian Intelligentsia have also joined the council. Alyaksandr Kazulin, a former Belarusian presidential candidate and political prisoner, has joined the council on his own.
The Coordination Council of Democratic Opposition will not have any administration which means that its member structures are independent and can take decisions about different issues basing on their own statutes.
