Ex-presidential candidate Mikhalevich allowed to leave for Czech Republic
Ales Mikhalevich, a former candidate at the presidential elections in 2010 in Belarus, has received permission from the Investigative Committee to leave for Czech Republic. However, he still remains a suspect in the organization of post-election "mass riots" on December 19, 2010. According to the Belarusian legislation, a person under investigation may go abroad only with the expressed permission of the investigating authorities.
Mikhalevich elaborated on it in a comment to Euroradio:
Mikhalevich: "This is very strange, because my article is particularly serious, which usually does not allow for anything ... I want to give up the political asylum in the Czech Republic, as it is the status that requires to be there and to conduct activities there. Or, at least to pay for health insurance."
Mikhalevich was arrested on 19 December 2010 and ended up in the KGB prison. When he got out at the end of February 2011, the ex-presidential candidate spoke about the torture. He also said that it was under torture that he agreed to cooperate with the KGB. Then in the spring of 2011, the politician secretly left Belarus and applied for political asylum in the Czech Republic. He returned on September 8, 2015 - after the release of Belarusian political prisoners. His case of "mass disorders" was immediately resumed.
