Two candidates for the position of the leader of the United Civil Party have been selected at the UCP congress taking place in Minsk: Anatol Lyabedzka and Victar Harbachou. However, Harbacou has withdrawn his candidature

Ballot-papers for a secret vote are being prepared now.

Anatol Lyabedzka has been elected leader of the United Civil Party as a result of a secret vote during the party congress taking place in Minsk. 89 delegates of the party congress have supported his candidature and only 17 people voted contra. Three ballot-papers have been nullified.


UCP withdraws from elections but allows its members to take part in them

A resolution about the participation of the UCP in the local elections has been adopted at the congress of the United Civil Party that is taking place in Minsk. 122 present delegates took part in the voting.

66 delegates did not want the party to continue its participation in the lections, 37 people voted pro and 5 people abstained.

At the same time, candidates have been allowed to continue their participation if they “have the zest”.

Ramanchuk does not run for UCP leader

The 13th Congress of the United Civil Party is taking place in Minsk. One of its participants’ tasks is choosing the new party leader and his or her deputies.
Let us remind you that 48-year-old Anatol Lyabedzka has been the head of the UCP for almost 10 years. A 44-year-old political scientist and economist Yaraslau Ramanchuk, current deputy head of the party, was mentioned as a person who could replace him.

However, Ramanchuk has clearly explained to ERB that he is not going to run for the position of the UCP leader. According to him, all members of the UCP administration have their responsibilities. Furthermore, the local and presidential elections are approaching so “changes before the elections make no sense”.


Regional UCP leaders support party’s further participation in local elections

The majority of leaders of UCP regional affiliates who made their speeches at the congress of the United Civil Party in Minsk criticized the possibility of withdrawing from the elections of local deputies.  In particular, representatives of Brest, Minsk and Hrodna regional affiliates and of Minsk city affiliate of the UCP were against the suspension of their participation in the elections.
In their opinion, if the party refuses to take part in the elections it will not allow UCP candidates to inform citizens about the party, attract additional supporters and protest against the way changes in the Election Code work. They think this step will deprive UCP representatives of the opportunity to communicate with the population, reports BelaPAN.

Lyabedzka: Belarus should have a critical dialogue with every EU member state

Anatol Lyabedzka promotes “a critical dialogue” between the EU and Belarus. The leader of the United Civil Party claimed it during the regularly scheduled 13th congress of the party on March 21.

"The UCP gradually supports the international policy based on national interests which means we need a critical dialogue with very EU member state”, - said Lyabedzka.

According to him, some opposition forces are wrong because they try to establish all the possible contacts with the Belarusian authorities. “I think that Belarus needs investments in democracy. I do not want the country’s economy to be supported in a situation where there are no democratic elections and no freedom of speech”, reports BelPAN quoting Lyabedzka.
The party leader has stressed that the European Union supporting Belarus should set up certain claims like allocating credits in response to free elections.

Further participation in election campaign discussed at UCP’s congress

The 13th congress of the United Civil Party is taking place in the Palace of Culture of Minsk Tractor Plant. A discussion dedicated to the party’s further participation in the elections of local deputies has started after the party leader Anatol Lyabedzka made a speech and a film about the UCP was shown.

Let us remind you that the head of the party and his deputies should be elected at the meeting. The Political Council will also be elected and a decision about the further participation of the UCP in the elections of local deputies will be taken.
