Former Minsk top official gets 14 years in prison
Minsk Regional Court finds ex-Deputy Mayor of Minsk Ihar Vasileyu guilty of large-scale graft
The former
high-ranked official was found guilty of bribery, committed by a person at in a high-profile public office. The prosecutor demanded to jail
him for 15 years. Vasilyeu did not admit guilt, informs BelaPAN.
A great part of the trial was held behind closed doors. Even the last word of the accused was
heard without journalists on February 8.
According to the investigation, Vasilyeu was detained by the KGB agents when
he was accepting the first part of the bribe in amount of 250 thousand US dollars. The former official had reportedly demanded 500 thousand dollars as graft from a Czech
company to facilitate the signing of an investment agreement to build a garbage processing plant.
