OSCE worried about “mass inactivity” law

The reason for it is the draft suggested by the Belarusian Council of Ministers. It limits the citizens’ right of assembly a lot, reminds the website “Charter-97”. According to the new draft, both mass actions and mass inactivity will be forbidden.

Lenarcic has noted that the current Belarusian legislation already allows forbidding peaceful meetings and makes spontaneous demonstrations almost impossible which contradicts to the international standards.

The ODIHR director has expressed a hope that the Belarusian government will reconsider the initiative. He has stressed that his organization is ready to help Belarus bring the country’s legislation in correspondence with its commitments in the OSCE.
