Pofalla: We are for sanctions that wouldn't affect ordinary Belarusians
Chief of Staff of the German Chancellery Ronald Pofalla met with the EHU students in Vilnius.
He took part in the festive event
dedicated to the 20th anniversary since the European Humanities University was
founded.
Ronald Pofalla underlined that the issue of political prisoners remains the
most important in the relations between the EU and the Belarusian authorities:
"We
still demand release of all political prisoners in Belarus. Until then, there
will be sanctions... We want to impose sanctions that would not affect ordinary
Belarusians, as they are not responsible for the current situation in Belarus.
The sanctions should put pressure on the leaders of the regime and to show that
their behaviour is unacceptable for us".
Pofalla also spoke about the death penalty. He is disappointed that they
continue issuance of death sentences in Belarus despite the West's attempts to
prevent this.
