Statkevich: "This way to freedom is unacceptable for me"
The political prisoner explained in a letter to his wife why he does not sign an appeal for pardon.
Mikalaj Statkevich writes that he cannot get released in such
a way. "I cannot betray myself,
cannot betray the people who collected signatures for me, who signed for my
nomination as a candidate, who voted for me, who came out to the Square when I
called them", - Radio Liberty quotes the ex-presidential candidate's
letter.
Let us remind you, last year Mikalaj Statkevich was sentenced to 6 years of
imprisonment in the framework of the Dec.19 case. In January, Statkevich stood
another trial - the court considered him a "malicious regime-breaker"
who was not "on the way to correction". He was transferred to the
prison of Mahileu from the Shklou penal colony.
After release of political prisoners Andrei Sannikau and Zmitser Bandarenka who
filed appeals for pardon, Lukashenka said that those who did not file such
appeals "will remain in prison". According to Belarusian human rights
defenders, there are still 14 political prisoners and prisoners of conscience
in Belarus.
