Students studying abroad to be deferred of army service

Students now can get an army service deferral even after having dropped out of a university temporarily. This has been made possible by the recent amendments to the Law on the Military Duty and Military Service.

Vyachaslau Ramenchyk, the head of the press office at the Defense Ministry of Belarus, told the European Radio for Belarus that even distance-learning post-graduate students will be entitled to deferral, although it was only possible for in-house students before.

The young people, who dropped out of school and then resumed their lesson or simply applied for reinstatement, could also postpone their military service.

“If a young man was receiving a higher or a secondary education and dropped out for certain reasons and then was re-admitted to the same or another school, he would be offered a deferral in order to complete his education.

However, he would be denied deferral if he was expelled from the university for a poor performance or indiscipline”.

Ramenchyk stressed that previously students could not count on deferment after dropping out of school even if he was later readmitted.

The Belarusians who study abroad can now also postpone their military service. Ramenchyk told the European Radio for Belarus they can do so regardless of the country. All they have to do is to submit official confirming documents.

Under the law, young men who have pregnant wives, orphans and the children without parental guardianship as well as those whose relatives were injured while on duty, are also entitled to deferral.
