Tell the Truth! campaign activists detained for balloons
10 activists of the Tell the Truth! public campaign on May 1 were detained at the Victory Square in downtown Minsk, when handing out balloons with the campaign symbols near the Gorky Park where massive festivities took place to mark the Labor Day. Mikhas Bashura, a campaign activist, told Euroradio that detentions took place just several minutes into the action. Police apparently were well prepared as the youngsters were put into a police bus that had been on stand-by.
The ten activists were kept for a while in this bus and were later taken to the Central District Police Department in Minsk.
They were released without charges three hours later. When at the police station, they were asked about their whereabouts on July 4, 2008 when a blast injured dozens of people during the Independence Day celebrations. Some people were forced to leave their finger prints.
It is likely that the detention took place because Alexander Lukashenka went for a walk in the same park later.
The Tell the Truth! campaign was launched in February 2010 by Belarusian poet Uladzimir Neklyaev, aiming "to find the true information about the situation in the country and to make it public".
