Unemployed
persons in Hantsevichy, Brest
region, get paid only 10,000 rubels (less than $10) for an eight-hour work-day in
the field. Some days, they receive a bucket of potatoes or beet roots in
addition to their pay.
The district has the highest unemployment rate in the
region. Many of its residents work in Russia. Farms in neighboring
districts pay higher rates per day – 15,000 rubels in Lyakhavichy, 25,000 in Klyotsk and 35,000 in Luninets. People
say local government chiefs are responsible for poverty.
