U.S. Department of State makes another statement on Belarus
Philip Crowley has expressed serious concern with regard to oppression of the civil society, independent media and the opposition by the Belarusian authorities.
The representative of the U.S. Department of State Philip Crowley came up with the U.S. statement on Belarus, which became the second one for the last two days, at the briefing in Washington on March 4, BelaPAN reports.
"Through its ongoing detentions, trials, and harsh prison sentences, the government is creating new political prisoners", - Crowley has said. "We urge the unconditional release of those detained in the crackdown without trials and the creation of space for the free expression of political views, the development of civil society, and the ability of citizens to expand their contact with open societies".
According to Philip Crowley, "There were nine presidential candidates for office; two of them are in jail; seven of them have been charged under these draconian actions by the Government of Belarus. They are simply unacceptable".
