17 thousand flights were cancelled in Europe on Friday. It was caused by the eruption of an Icelandic volcano situated near the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier.
The volcanic activity started after a 200-years break. The ashes rose to the height of 6 thousand meters and covered the sky in North Europe. It blocks plane engines so no flights are possible. Great Britain, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Lithuania and Estonia have suspended air travel.
Sweden, France, Germany, Poland, Austria and Czechia have curtailed their flights. All 58 “Eurostar” trains connecting London and the continental Europe are packed.
The ash cloud is moving to the east and south-west of Europe. It is not clear when it is going to stop.
The Polish authorities have claimed that they may have to postpone the funeral of the presidential couple – Lech and Maria Kaczyńskis – if the irregularity of flights persists. 80 governmental delegations were going to attend the ceremony.
