Shautsou: It is immoral not to let Lukashenka go to Kyiv
The EU's position not to let Lukashenka go to Kyiv is immoral, a political scientist Jury Shautsou thinks.
Let us remind you, President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso will refuse to participate in the conference in Kyiv if the Belarusian President also goes there. The international conference "Twenty Five Years after Chernobyl Tragedy. Security of the Future" will take place on April 20-22 in Kyiv.
To the political scientist’s opinion, Barroso’s
statement is connected with the trials against the figurants of the “Dec.19
case” in the first place.
Shautsou: "However, to my opinion, it
is not a decent step from the side of the European Union, as there are topics
like the “Red Cross”, or the Chernobyl situation, where we should put aside our
political discrepancies. This is the first time I come across a case when the
Chernobyl problem is made so political by the West".
However, Shautsou estimates the consequences of
this loud statement as non-essential.
Shautsou: "There will be no direct consequences.
This incident will leave a nasty taste in a month, as they say. This is a moral
conflict. Moreover, in this case, the West has not a very moral position,
unlike the case with those trials".
The International Chernobyl Conference will take
place in a month. Which position will Kyiv choose? Shautsou thinks the
organizers will try to find a compromise.
Shautsou: "They are most likely to look
for some compromise. Moreover, there won’t be many changes in the international
politics, especially upon the results of what is happening in Japan".
